Reef net

During six weeks in July and August of 2003, staff of ReefNet Inc.collectively spent over 850 hours exploring the reefs around St. Vincent. Their main objective was to document the marine life as thoroughly as possible with photos and videos in order to provide unique new material for an upgrade of their computerized field guide: "Fishes of the Caribbean and Adjacent Waters."

Another objective was to locally sponsor and participate in The Great Annual Fish Count (GAFC), a fish survey event that takes place each July in many locations and generates valuable fish diversity and abundance information for the REEF database.

ReefNet's final tally of 287 fish species included 63 that had not been previously recorded in this area, several that had never been photographed in their natural habitats, and at least two species that are new to science.

The photos in this gallery are a representative sample of the unusual and rare images they collected on this field trip. Several of the photos were taken by Les Wilk, but most of them were taken by his son Keri.
